Craig was always interested in every facet of the arts. After three years studying Fine Arts at the Queensland College of Art (majoring in sculpture) he spent a year in Carrara, Italy studying the art of marble carving.
In 1983 he received a scholarship from the Italian Government and returned to Carrara for 15 months studying and working, primarily in marble. He returned to Carrara several times during his career.
He attended and organised many symposiums worldwide and had a particular skill in mentoring young sculptors. In later years commission work became a large part of his work involving a vast range of materials and styles.
He worked mainly in marble and sandstone and expressed strong family values in his work.
"I try to make my sculptures appear light, rhythmic and with an element of movement... often belying the weight they really are. I aim always to create sculptures that emit an aura of beauty, harmony, balance and peace”
